AGAWAM – Agawam residents went to the polls Nov. 5 to vote in members of the city council and school committee. They also decided whether or not to allow the sale of recreational marijuana in town.

Mayor William Sapelli won reelection for a second term after running unopposed. Sapelli was first elected in November 2017 and was sworn into office in January of 2018. Sapelli won 81.65 percent of the vote with a total of 3,770 votes in his favor. Write-in votes for the mayoral candidates totaled 115, or 2.49 percent of the vote.

Of the 10 candidates seeking reelection to city council, nine were voted in for another two-year term. Incumbent city councilors who were reelected include current City Council President, Christopher Johnson; current Vice President Cecilia Calabrese; George Bitzas; Gina Letellier; Anthony Suffriti; Robert Rossi; Paul Cavallo; Dino Mercadante and Rosemary Sandlin.

Calabrese received the most votes out of all city council candidates with 2,401 votes, a total of 4.73 percent of the vote.

Newcomers Gerald Smith and Mario Tedeschi Jr. both earned enough votes to secure a place on the council. Smith earned 2,167 or 4.27 percent of the vote during the Nov. 5 election. Current Planning Board and Housing Committee member, Tedeschi, garnered 2,105 or 4.14 percent of the vote.

Incumbent candidate, Robert Magovern, received 1,784 or 3.51 percent of the vote which was not enough to help him secure another term on the council.

Write in votes for City Council candidates totaled 39, making up .08 percent of the vote.

Voters also elected a new member to the school committee. All six current school committee members ran for reelection, with only one newcomer, Dawn Dube, challenging for a seat on the committee.

Of the seven candidates, five current school committee members were reelected for an additional two-year term. Members who will be sworn in for another term include Shelley Borgatti-Reed, Anthony Bonavita, Carmino Mineo, Wendy Rua and Kerri O’Connor.

Borgatti-Reed, garnered the majority vote with 2,783 ballots in her favor, making up 10.05 percent of the vote.

Newcomer, Dube earned 8.91 percent of the vote with 2,469 ballots cast in her favor, ousting incumbent candidate Tracy Wilkie. Wilkie received 2,186 votes, making up 7.89 of the vote, which was not enough votes to secure another term on the committee.

Agawam voters also took a position on recreational marijuana shops before the Dec. 31 expiration of a temporary moratorium banning the shops in town limits. The council decided in August during a special meeting to let voters decide if they were in favor of adult-use marijuana shops setting up in town.

During the Nov. 5 election a total of 4,513 made their opinions known about the matter. Of the thousands who voted, 2,682 voted against recreational marijuana shops being allowed in town limits. Residents who voted against allowing the shops made up 58.09 percent of the vote. Residents who voted in favor of marijuana shops in town made up 39.66 percent of the vote with 1,831 ballots cast in favor of the recreational pot shops.
