AGAWAM — William Sapelli cruised to re-election on Nov. 2, winning another two-year term as mayor with nearly 79 percent of the vote.

Sapelli defeated challenger Charles Alvanos 4,359 votes to 1,002, in an election with about 24 percent turnout, according to unofficial results provided on election night by Town Clerk Vincent Gioscia.

The City Council will have one new member in 2022, after Agawam made challenger Anthony Russo the top vote-getter among council candidates, with 2,964 votes. The rest of the 11 councilors elected from a 14-candidate field were incumbents. Councilor George Bitzas led the way with 2,816 votes, followed by Cecilia Calabrese (2,768), Christopher Johnson (2,637), Paul Cavallo (2,633), Dino Mercadante (2,601), Rosemary Sandlin (2,574), Anthony Suffriti (2,464), Gina Letellier (2,379), Robert Rossi (2,331) and Gerald Smith (2,309). The 11th incumbent on the council, Mario Tedeschi Jr., lost his re-election bid after finishing 13th, with 2,235 votes. He finished behind Thomas David Hendrickson (2,244) and ahead of last-place finisher Peter McNair (2,146).

All four School Committee incumbents running for re-election finished in the top six, led by Shelley Borgatti-Reed, with 2,981 votes. Others re-elected were Dawn Dube (2,487), Wendy Rua (2,535) and Kerri O’Connor (2,251). Challenger A.J. Christopher finished ahead of three of the incumbents, with 2,647 votes. Competition for the sixth seat on the committee was close, with the preliminary results showing Michael Donald Perry at 2,005 votes and Catherine McDougal with an even 2,000. Three other challengers rounded out the field, Stephen Davis with 1,915 votes, Robert Lawler with 1,612 and Edward Champigny with 1,362. The two newcomers to the board will take the seats being vacated by Anthony Bonavita and Carmino Mineo, who both chose not to run for re-election.

The mayor, councilors and School Committee members all serve two-year terms. The new term will begin in January 2022. It will be Sapelli’s third term as mayor.

More coverage of the election will be printed in the Nov. 11 edition of The Reminder.
