AGAWAM — In observance of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, the town of Agawam is set to host their annual ceremonies, with some modifications to their well-known traditions.

Veterans Director Christopher Lanski said the day will begin at 7 a.m., with a gathering at the Vietnam Veterans Bridge, also known as the Strathmore Bridge, on Bridge Street in North Agawam. In a brief ceremony, the American Legion, Agawam Veterans Council and guests will toss a wreath into the Westfield River, to remember veterans past and present. Lanski said this is typically done by the mayor or by members of a Gold Star family — relatives of someone who died or was killed while serving their country.

The ceremony will include a volley and rifle salute, along with a guest speaker that had not been determined as of press time.

Following this early-morning ceremony, another ceremony will take place at 10:45 a.m. at Clifford Granger School in Feeding Hills Center.

“This year is a little more special,” said Lanski. “In the past, the 10:45 a.m. ceremony took place at the Veterans Green [next to] Phelps Elementary. This year only, it’s being moved to Granger Elementary, the Field of Parade, the Agawam Revolutionary War militia training grounds, to announce the dedication of the flagpole that was donated by the Asta-Ferrero family and the Agawam Veterans Council.”

The town’s history includes five generations of the Asta-Ferrero family serving in the military, Lanski said.

Lanski said some local officials have been invited to this ceremony, including Mayor William Sapelli, state Sen. John Velis, state Rep. Nicholas Boldyga and Congressman Richard Neal.

Similar to the first ceremony, Lanski said attendees will honor veterans both past and present. There will be a flag-raising, singing of the national anthem, playing of taps, firing from the American Legion and additional singers.

One of the Veterans Council members, Frank Mazzei, will toll a bell in honor of fallen veterans.

Rob Keenan with the 25th Regiment will be a guest speaker. Lanski said Keenan knows his history and will be sharing the significance of the “Field of Parade” with participants.

Although the two ceremonies will differ, some of the events taking place at each ceremony will be the same. Of the two, Lanski expects a larger turnout at the 10:45 a.m. ceremony.

The events set to take place on Veterans Day will happen rain or shine. If the weather is poor, Lanski said, most of the Granger ceremony may move indoors to the nearby Agawam Junior High School. The flag raising will take place outside, no matter the weather.
