CHICOPEE – The city has planned a more than $6 million road and sidewalk repair schedule for 2019.

The funding for the list projects comes from both city and state sources, according to Nathan Moreau in the mayor’s office.

The overall amount is higher than usual, he explained to Reminder Publishing because the list of projects includes a number that were carried over from last year.

At his last briefing with the City Council, Mayor Richard Kos said the projects could begin once asphalt starts to be made. The city buys much of its asphalt from Palmer Paving in Springfield and an official there said the company anticipates producing asphalt about April 1.

Moreau added that with asphalt production would also come permanent repairs to potholes in the city’s roads.

“The road and sidewalk improvements totaling over $6 million are a necessary investment in our city. My goal is to put in place additional funding so that further necessary road work can be completed,” Kos said in a statement.

Each of the city councilors has been given $100,000 to designate to projects in their wards or throughout the city.
