Chicopee School Committee is told about relocation to City Hall

CHICOPEE – More Chicopee students are attending school in person under the hybrid plan approved by the School Committee.

School Superintendent Lynn Clark told the committee at its meeting on Oct. 7 that an additional 1,068 students are now attending school in person.

She said the format requires teachers, parents and students do additional work and thanks everyone for their participation.

Laura Demakis, president of the Chicopee Education Association, told the committee the importance of Education Support Professionals (ESP) supporting students with remote learning, as she learned through a survey of teachers in the district.

She asked the committee to consider lowering the threshold of hours so the district’s paraprofessionals could quality for the Family and Medical Leave Act

Demakis said these employees are the lowest paid in the district and that allowing them to quality for these befits would be a way to show thanks for their efforts.

She added that protective equipment and hand sanitizer is readily available in the district, according to teachers.

Mayor John Vieau spoke to the committee about moving their meetings to the renovated City Hall Auditorium when the project is completed and to have a permanent home for the committee there. He asked from a consensus from the committee.

He described the refurbished space as “state of the art broadcast and recording studio” that would have permanent locking desks for committee members.

Committee member Mary Beth Pniak-Costello said “It makes sense to move.”
