CHICOPEE – A group of parents and students are working to add a much-needed physical education and playscape to Dupont Middle School.

They have launched a GoFundMe page to raised at least $7,000, which could be used to help leverage from KaBoom! – a non-profit that helps communities build playgrounds – a grant for the project.

Pamela Nadeau, whose son Wyatt is a seventh-grader at Dupont, explained to Reminder Publishing the idea to have an improvement came from the Fuel up to Play 60 Wellness program of which her son is a member. She is a member of the school’s PTO and is assisting the students for the fund-raising campaign.

As she wrote on the GoFundMe page, “Dupont Middle School PTO took this plan and ran with it. You can see from the above photo that some work is needed! We are currently looking to raise funds to help make this happen for the students and the citizens of Chicopee. The money will go towards outside fields, courts, outdoor sports circuit training stations, and recreation equipment for recess, physical education, and the Chicopee community.”

She explained, “This is all student-led.”

She said right now the area in question is in the rear of the school and is a grassy area. The plan would be to install tetherball, kickball fields, outdoor workout equipment (including sports circuit training stations), foursquare courts and paint new lines on the basketball court.

“We want to make it nice back there,” she said.

The area wouldn’t just be used for school activities Wyatt added. “We really want to the community to use it.”

The KaBoom! organization is no stranger to Chicopee. Nadeau noted the organization has helped in installing playground areas at the Chicopee Boys & Girls Club and at Streiber Memorial School.
