CHICOPEE –  Theory Wellness is teaming up with the courier delivery service and social equity applicant Treevit to offer one of the first cannabis delivery services in Western Mass.

For Theory Wellness, the process of developing a system for cannabis delivery with Treevit has been an ongoing one, according to Executive Director Thomas Winstanley. “We talked almost a year ago, well before Treevit had officially gotten their social equity license. [Treevit] has always been on our radar, they were the kind of partner we were looking for,” said Winstanley. He shared that Theory wanted a partner that presented extensive knowledge of the local area.

Treevit, which is ran by Springfield native Gyasi Sellers, has one of the three recreational cannabis courier licenses in the state. According to their joint press release, Sellers began the social equity application process in 2019, stating that he enjoyed the work that went into completing it. “It was a lot of fun actually. It was smooth for me because I had an idea of what I wanted to do…this is something that I have been passionate about,” said Sellers, who shared that he previously fought for medical cannabis legalization in a prior job. When completing the process, he said that he had Theory marked as the top group he wanted to work with.

As a Springfield Central High School graduate who has lived around the area, Sellers said he has made a home in Western Mass. He explained that he plans to use his local expertise to better represent the area in the cannabis conversation. “In the cannabis industry, we’re underrepresented at times with the noise of everything going on in Boston. That’s just another reason why we’re excited to capitalize on this,” said Sellers.

For customers looking to utilize the service, Winstanley assures it’s relatively straightforward to use. Similar to ordering food online, he explained that customers will use Theory’s website and put in their address to see if they are in range of delivery. Customers then place their desired products in their cart and set a time for delivery after verifying their license, according to Winstanley. From there, Sellers’ team delivers the product while collecting payment upon their arrival. “It’s very seamless, we want to make this as simple as possible,” said Winstanley.

Theory’s integration of delivery comes on the heels of a continually expanding cannabis market in Western Mass. When it comes to other businesses, Theory believes that competition will bring the best product to the forefront. “Competition is good for this industry, it gives consumers a choice and sets a higher standard for what cannabis business should be,” said Winstanley.

Theory and Sellers shared their hopes to leave a positive impact with their new partnership. “We have a chance to take away some of the stigma [about cannabis], as well as creating exciting new opportunities for jobs,” said Sellers.
