EASTHAMPTON – Nashawannuck Pond and Lower Mill Pond were recently closed due to cyanobacteria algae.

Cyanobacteria can cause the water to look slightly discolored and cloudy. They are usually blue or green but can also be brown or red. The algae blooms can be caused from warm weather, sunlight, excess nutrients in the water like human or animal waste, and storm water runoff.

In a press release, the Health Department said it sent photos of both ponds to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) Toxicology Program to help identify the algae. After review, that the cyanobacteria cells may exceed the MDPH guidelines for recreational waterbodies in Massachusetts.

Health Agent Bri Eichstaedt said last week the Health Department would conduct follow up sampling one week from when it was identified. “They require two samples below the guideline levels to be taken, one week apart,” said Eichstaedt.

Eichstaedt said it’s important to note that people should avoid the water at all costs, regardless of what the water looks like, until the advisory is pulled.

Some health concerns if exposed to the algae are skin and eye irritation and inhaling water splashback with the algae in it can cause asthma-like symptoms. If a small amount is ingested, it can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and if a large amount is ingested it can cause liver or neurological damage.

Signs will be posted at all access points to the ponds and the Health Department will let the public know once the advisory is lifted.
