WESTERN MASS. – The remnants of Tropical Storm Isaias sideswiped the Pioneer Valley on Aug. 4, bringing with it rains and heavy winds that took down trees and left much of the region without power.

Easthampton Mayor Nicole LaChapelle credited the Police and Fire Departments as well as the Department of Public Works for their swift response.

“The departments met six hours before the storm hit and the winds were strongert than we initially expected,”?she said. “They did a great job working to identify areas where there were trees down or hot wires and we had roads open pretty quickly.”

Power restoration was more of a concern. LaChapelle said Eversource’s Hadley office responded to the storm, but there were “a lot of demands” that slowed recovery of service. Some areas, including 1 Cottage St., were without power until the weekend, she said. While power was restored, some areas are still awaiting new transformers.

The Southampton Police Department reported that by the morning of Aug. 5, all roads in town were “open and passable,” but a section of White Loaf Road between Middle and Pequot roads had utility line damage.
