EAST LONGMEADOW – Selectman Angela Thorpe, running for her second term, said she and her husband James are working with the state to resolve an issue of $5,094 in unpaid income taxes the couple owes.

“We have contacted the [Massachusetts] Department of Revenue,” Thorpe told Reminder Publications. “We are on a payment plan. We have been on a payment plan. It should be paid off pretty soon. We had some unexpected expenses. We put four kids through college and we’re just like everybody else trying to make ends meet.”

She added there is a lien at the couple’s home at 89 Day Ave., but after the taxes are paid the lien would be removed.

Thorpe said she and her husband began making payments in November.

According to the notice of Massachusetts tax lien, the period end date was Dec. 31, 2012 and the assessment date was June 23, 2015. The assessment amount is $3,117 and the statutory additions come to $1,976, both of which add up to the total owed.

She added she doesn’t believe the situation would impact her chances for reelection.

“I think if anything it makes people realize that were just normal folks,” she explained. “We’re all trying to make ends meet. I understand that we all have taxes and it is our responsibility and we will meet it and we have been meeting it. We just couldn’t pay it all at one time.”

The preliminary election for one seat on the Board of Selectmen is slated for March 15 at Birchland Park Middle School. The candidates who receive the most and second most votes would remain on the ballot for the April 12 Annual Town Election.
