EAST LONGMEADOW – Interested in supporting the East Longmeadow School Parent Teacher Organizations (PTO) while simultaneously cleaning up your home? The five East Longmeadow PTOs are hosting not only an electronic recycling event, but also a clothing drive and paper shredding event on Sept. 7.

Rain or shine, the PTOs will be at the East Longmeadow High School main entrance at 180 Maple St. from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. collecting electronics, clothes and paper.

For a cash-only fee, the PTO will be collecting the following electronics and subsequently recycling them:

•Home audio/video: radio, VCRs, DVD players, tapedecks, receivers, amplifiers, etc. for $15 each.

•Kitchen appliances: microwaves, toasters, coffee makers, keurigs, blenders, etc. for $15 each.

•Household appliances: vacuums, carpet cleaners, sewing machines, etc. for $15 each.

•Yard equipment: trimmers, chainsaws, hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, etc. for $15 each.

•Box/Bag of misc parts: wires, small components, etc. (No small batteries will be accepted) for $15.

•Computer items: servers, laptops, tablets, printers, copiers, fax, scanners, etc. for $15 each.

•Computer monitors: $25 each.

•Televisions: $35 each.

•Mid-size appliances: air conditioners, dehumidifiers, mini refrigerators, $25 each.

•Large appliances: washer, dryer, stove, dishwasher, refrigerator, exercise equipment, $40 each.

•Styrofoam: #6 PS symbol only. Clean and white, cups, trays, egg trays, coolers, fish boxes, preformed packing block, etc., for free.

•Laptop & Car/Lead batteries are also free. No small batteries will be accepted.

According to information provided by the PTO, the idea of the clothing drive is simple. Students, staff, parents and the community work together to donate unwanted used clothing and shoes, which are subsequently weighed and exchanged for cash. The PTO is asking for people to donate good quality, clean clothes, belts, handbags and shoes. The shoes should be tied together if possible.

For the paper-shredding portion of the event, Proshred Security of Springfield will be on site from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The fee is $5 per bag or box of paper that is dropped off. The East Longmeadow Health Department is sponsoring this event.

Finally, the East Longmeadow PTOs are asking for people to consider bringing a non-perishable food item for the East Longmeadow open pantry.
