EAST LONGMEADOW – The East Longmeadow Planning Board met on Jan. 2 and voted to recommend to the Town Council that 330 Chestnut St. assessed as parcel 18-38-0 be re-zoned as mixed use on the zoning map.

The re-zoning of 330 Chestnut street will allow for the property to be redevolped as a mixture of market rate apartments and condominiums with co-located retail establishments. The parcel of land recommended is 40.35 acres.

Moving forward, the Town Council hosted a public hearing for the zoning map amendment to re-zone parcel 18-38-0 to a Mixed Use District on Jan. 9 at 6:45 p.m in the Council on Aging meeting room.

At the hearing, Planning Board Chair George Kingston reccomended that since the Town Council had not yet heard the bylaw change that would create the district, he suggested that the hearing be continued until they were able to “advertise and open the hearing for actually creating the district because it’s not really possible to sign a parcel to a district that doesn’t exist yet.” Additionally, Kingston noted a bylaw was reccomended by the Planning Board in November 2017, however it was never acted upon by the Town Council, therefore he suggested the bylaw be advertised prior to the Jan. 23 meeting so they could have all of the information at once.

“I know it’s confusing and I apologize if the Planning Board had anything to do with it but rather than confuse it further that’s my reccomendation,” Kingston said.

The Town Council passed a motion to continue the public hearing for the zoning map amendment to the Feb. 13 Town Council meeting at 6:30 p.m.
