EAST?LONGMEADOW – The East Longmeadow rotary is continually a topic of discussion and at times distress, for town residents and commuters alike.  However, as of June 27, Town Manager Denise Menard wrote in the Town Manager’s report to the Town Council that the Maple Street spur of the rotary has been accident-free a month after the intersection change.

The Maple St. section of the rotary was once a two lane rotary.  In May, the entry was  changed to one-lane.  This was an effort to decrease accidents within the rotary itself.

East Longmeadow Police Chief Jeffrey Dalessio suggests that though he is aware accidents will not cease in the rotary, he is anticipating continued reduced accidents.

Considering the change of lanes from two to one has made a positive impact, the barrels that are inhibiting the area may soon be replaced with a more permanent solution.

“We’re looking forward to permanent changes and increasing the island there,” Dalessio said.

Dalessio continued to say that if further action and improvement to the rotary is made, pavement markings will be the next step.

“This rotary is backwards, this isn’t a true rotary.  Everyone tries to reach that center and then stops,” Dalessio added, “The little changes over time will help.”
