EAST LONGMEADOW – While many college students will spend this summer relaxing, Brian Nguyen will be running his own business and gaining invaluable experience. The University of Massachusetts Amherst freshman is launching a local branch of Student Painters, an exterior house painting service run by college students over the summer break.

Student Painters works in conjunction with Young Entrepreneurs Across America, a company that develops college-aged entrepreneurs, to set students up with the tools they need to manage their businesses, including providing advertising, mentors, liability insurance and worker compensation. Nguyen expressed confidence that Student Painters has given him all the skills he will need to be successful.

As explained by Nguyen, Student Painters provides the start-up costs for the business, which are paid back as it earns a profit. After the loan is paid back, Nguyen keeps the remainder of the money his business makes. He plans to run the painting business in addition to working at Miss Saigon, a restaurant in Amherst.

A Student Painters branch earns an average of $60,000 in revenue over a season. Nguyen has set a goal for himself of earning $300,000 minus expenses, although he admitted that it is ambitious.

He said that he will likely employ 10 painters, also students on break for the summer.

“[It’s] a great summer job for students who are looking to earn tuition money,” Nguyen said of working as a painter. The final number of employees, however, will depend on the demand for the service. He plans to market to homeowners in the East Longmeadow and Longmeadow area.

“I have grown up in the East Longmeadow area, so I am especially excited to be serving people from my home town,” he said.

Nguyen recently received a proclamation from Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno for beginning his business venture.

“One of my biggest goals in life – I want to open little clinics around the world,” said Nguyen, who is a pre-med student majoring in psychology. “I’m really hoping to learn the ins and outs of running a business.”
