GRANBY — The School Committee welcomed new member Michael Durham on May 23 in its first meeting following this year’s town election before taking care of reorganization of the committee through the election of a chair and vice chair.

Durham was the only newcomer elected to the committee as incumbent Stephanie Parent was reelected through write-ins after initially not seeking reelection, and George Bahlke was voted in to finish the three-year term he originally started in an interim role.

Parent nominated previous Chair Jennifer Bartosz to continue in the role and credited her work in the past few years.

“That’s been her role and she’s done a great job. It’s a fairly mixed or newer board and I personally think it makes sense to keep that structure,” Parent said.

Bartosz was elected unanimously amongst her fellow committee members.

For vice chair, Parent was once again nominated and elected to the role without much debate. Fellow committee member Jill Pelletier added she was fine keeping these two roles as was before the election for consistency and due to the work at hand for the committee.

“I feel like the way things happen and the way people participate and the subcommittee participation, everyone has opportunities to participate across the board so whether its vice chair or regular ways of participation,” Pelletier said.

Superintendent’s updates

Superintendent Stephen Sullivan took time during his updates portion of the meeting to address the hateful graffiti found in the bathroom of the Junior-Senior High School earlier this month. Mostly written in pencil, the graffiti contained hateful and offensive messages.

Sullivan said the school leadership team along with staff and students have been continuing work to respond to the hateful act.

“There was a student meeting with different student organizations which was a very good conversation about some things that are working, some things students would like to see in the schools, some potential next steps,” Sullivan said.

Sullivan added the equity team at the high school has been “reinvigorated” this year and has been beneficial in managing this incident. He also noted he was still working with the school and community at large in forming a community conversation about the graffiti incident. Sullivan said the Police Department has been a good partner in managing this incident and working toward setting up a community meeting.

Also discussed during Sullivan’s updates is that annual Town Meeting will resume on Monday, June 5 at 7 p.m. at East Meadow School. He said of the handful of articles still awaiting town approval, one is the school budget.

One final update of note from Sullivan was that the district was looking for Charter Day volunteers as part of a concerted effort to have the school district be more involved in town events.
