WESTERN MASS. – The Springfield Rescue Mission is on their final stretch of collecting items for those in need. With the help of Sisters of Spear, an abundance of donations have already been made.

Beginning in early October, a collection of hats, gloves, underwear and socks began and will run until Nov. 30. Drop-off bins are available at three locations including Rice Fruit Farm, 757 Main St., in Wilbraham; Reminder Publishing,  181 Root Rd., in Westfield; and Balise Lexus, 1385 Riverdale St., West Springfield.

Sisters of Spear is this year’s sponsor for the clothing drive. Jean McGrady-Keith, a volunteer of Sisters of Spear, is leading efforts. She is the group’s administrator and is responsible for getting out flyers, updating their Facebook page and picking up bins when they’ve reached capacity. “We are a group of women who support and empower other women. We raise money for local charities and reach out to ladies needing help,” she said.

Underwear and socks must be new and in packages, but all other items can be used if in fair condition All items are quarantined before donating to others.

“We have had several bins full already. I bring them to Springfield Rescue Mission and a date will be arranged where we will be presenting items to them for the homeless,” McGrady-Keith informed Reminder Publishing.

According to its website, “The Springfield Rescue Mission (SRM) has been providing 125-plus years of service to the homeless, addicted and poor. Men, women and children seek the many services provided at the Rescue Mission daily.”

Despite COVID-19, Sisters of Spear, along with Springfield Rescue Mission, have continued to be of assistance to those who need it most. “SRM continues today to provide the homeless and low-income with services to meet their most basic needs and is a safe place of refuge – all free of charge and without direct government assistance,” according to the Springfield Rescue Mission.
