HOLLAND — Holland residents will not have the option for mail-in voting for the June town election, after the Board of Selectmen unanimously voted in favor of opting out.

A public hearing took place on March 7 to discuss the matter. The hearing was a requirement by the state and was requested by Town Clerk Valerie Lundin.

Lundin said, “I believe most of the residents are able to get to the Community Center to vote on our June town election … I would like to keep it that way. Also, they could still come in and do their walk-ins or [fill out an] absentee ballot.”

She explained that the reason the town would like to opt-out of mail-in voting is because the state mandated it for last year’s primary and federal elections.

“It was very costly,” said Lundin. “No one knew it was going to cost that much to do the mail-in [voting] and I don’t think the town can afford that just for our June election.”

Lundin said the state had provided the town with the envelope, the ballot and the return envelope to send to residents.

However, she shared that the state was unaware of how much it would cost to send out 350 ballots and that the town clerk had to pay for it.

She noted that a small reimbursement was received.

Lundin went on to say that they could do this for every election but for the town one, they would like to opt out and offer voting as it has typically been done in the past.

On top of the cost, she said it is also time consuming.

A motion was made to opt out of mail-in voting for the June town election. The motion was seconded and unanimously approved.

The town election will take place on June 13.
