HOLYOKE – Due to COVID-19’s impact on staffing shortages, high overhead and low business, owner Rich Fitzpatrick of Mel’s Restaurant in Holyoke, decided to close the eatery on Father’s Day, June 20, 2021. Fast forward to five months later, the family decided to reopen.

Mel’s is a family-run business and has served “authentic Italian” recipes for over 35 years, and according to Rich Fitzpatrick, it is a “landmark in Holyoke.”

“The main thing was, we just needed income coming in to help maintain and keep up the building. There are still bills coming in so the only way to get them paid was to reopen,” said Chris Fitzpatrick, Rich’s son, who also works at Mel’s.

On Nov. 10, Mel’s reopened for take-out services only. Chris reported that “the first week was literally outstanding. After that, we're super busy every day.”

Chris explained that though they had removed “a couple of items” from the previous menu, he said that “depending on how busy we are, customers can ask for something we used to offer and if we have time, we will make it for them.” In addition, each night, they run one or two specials, “like chicken Francaise or chicken Marsala,” he added.

When asked if there is a particular item that Mel’s is known for, Chris replied, “Yes, our meat sauce” – which is also available for purchase by the pint for $5.25 or quart at $9.25.

As for plans to reopen the dining room anytime soon, Chris said, “As of right now with the way that business is going, it’s a little better with only take-out, because then we have a lot less overhead. And we’re running with, you know, half the staff. So, it’s making it a little bit easier right now to catch up on building stuff.” However, he added, “It would be nice to be able to open the dining room again.”

Mel’s is located at 490 Pleasant St. in Holyoke. They are open Wednesday - Sunday from 3-8 p.m.
