LONGMEADOW – With the completion of the new Longmeadow Adult Center, the Greenwood Center on Maple Street in Longmeadow will largely be vacant. The town is now taking steps to determine the next life of the one-time elementary school.

In December, a study began assessing the building with special attention on the wing that housed the adult center. The study is expected to be completed sometime in March and will be reviewed by the building committee.

The Greenwood Center is a 20,500 square-foot building with two wings and a connecting hallway. The larger of the two wings is the former home of the Adult Center and Council on Aging programming. It is a long, rectangular structure with several former classrooms and few larger common areas.

There are a few options for use of the building. Previously, the dispatch company, WestCOMM, of which Longmeadow is a member community, had examined the facility to determine its suitability as a dispatch center. It has since decided to locate the new dispatch center in the former Salter College building in Chicopee.

A feasibility study is underway examining the possibility of relocating the Town Hall and municipal offices to the building. There are existing accessibility issues with the current Town Hall at 20 Williams St. Additionally, the space constraints in the existing location have created problems with office space, storage and restroom use.

“If use of Greenwood Center as municipal office space is not viable we will consider what future reuse of the space may be,” Town Manager Lyn Simmons told Reminder Publishing. She did not say whether razing the 1965 structure was on the table.
