LONGMEADOW – The National Association of Music Merchants Foundation (NAMM) recently recognized Longmeadow as one of the best communities for music education in 2016.

Superintendent of Schools Marie Doyle told Reminder Publications she believes the district has an “outstanding” music program and considers the recognition as a “well deserved honor.”

She added, “We have several of the best [music] teachers in the state, if not the country, so I think it’s well deserved. I think our students are exposed to a wide variety of music and opportunities to study. It’s everything from orchestra to band to vocal [groups]. We start that in fourth grade and students are able to study all the way through grade 12.”

Doyle said she believes the Longmeadow community is highly supportive of music.

“Time and time again they have stepped up to the plate to make sure that the budget funds in the music department is highly valued and an integral part of the education of students in Longmeadow,” she noted. “We greatly appreciate the community support because without parents supporting our budget, our music education wouldn’t be possible.

She added, “If you were to speak with parents at any [grade] level, they would tell you that [students] absolutely love their music teachers.”

According to NAMM, the foundation was created in 2006 and “represents the generosity and philanthropy of the music products industry.” The organization also advocates for music education, funds music research, and awards grants to create music making opportunities for people of all ages.

The Agawam Public School District was also recognized as a best community for music education.
