LONGMEADOW – Last week we took a look at home organization tips from local fashion and lifestyle blogger Jaimie Tucker. This week, we’re receiving some tips on shopping our closets, what pieces in our closets are timeless, and how to refresh an old clothing item that might be hard to part with.

Reminder Publishing (RP): You mentioned the phrase “shopping your closet,” what does that mean?

Tucker: It can be so much fun to shop one’s closet! What that means is instead of going out and buying more clothes and accessories, take a look at what you already own and come up with new ways to wear old favorites. One way to find inspiration is to google search “new trends for spring and summer 2020.” See what is already in one’s closet that can be used to create similar looks.

RP: What pieces would you describe as timeless, ones that readers can keep for 10, 15 years without having to toss them, and what pieces do you think need a refresh after a year or two?

Tucker: Purchasing the best one can afford when it comes to classic accessories is a wise investment. A pair of simple black boots, a peacoat jacket, and a purse in a timeless style are examples of classic pieces that can be worn for years without going out of style. Plus, feeling great about an item that one is wearing is priceless! Garments such as t-shirts and other more casual loungewear looks need a refresh more often since these are the clothes that do the “heavy lifting” in our daily lives. When they start to look worn and lose their shape, it's time to replace them or retire them to avoid looking sloppy.

RP: What is the number one item readers should add to their closets that can refresh an old outfit?

Tucker: Readers have probably heard this before, though it’s so true. Accessories can really refresh an old outfit. A statement necklace, a pair of great ankle boots or colorful sandals can really change the look of a basic jeans and t-shirt outfit. Try wearing multiple complementary bracelets on one arm, or a ring stack for more casual outfits. For dressier occasions, a pair of big, bold earrings can instantly update a look and make a statement.

RP: What are some ideas on how to refresh older pieces instead of giving them away?

Tucker: Get creative and see if there are ways items can be updated. Tie dye is trending right now. Maybe a faded white shirt can be tie dyed, extending its life. This year, cropped straight leg denim is the most popular jean style going into spring and summer. Cut a pair of outdated long straight leg jeans into a cropped version. Use a leather hole punch to add holes to a belt so it can be worn around the waist, as well as the hips.
