PALMER – National Night Out, an annual community-building campaign that bolsters police and neighborhood camaraderie is set to return to Palmer on Aug. 2.

From 6 to 8 p.m., the Town Hall/Police Station parking lot at 4419 Main St. will be packed with entertainment and information for all.

Ryan McNutt, town manager, said that Palmer has participated in National Night Out for about six years. “It’s always a good turnout,” he shared.

“[It’s an] opportunity for the public to meet town departments, see vehicles their tax dollars purchased,” said McNutt. “Other town and social organizations usually set up informational tents.”

According to the National Night Out Organization, participants often host a safety demonstration as the overall mission is to make neighborhoods safer and more caring places to live. McNutt said Palmer will be hosting a demonstration, consisting of police, fire and EMS and the Hampden County Sheriff Special Response Team (SRT).

Aside from the informative aspect of the event, McNutt noted that there will be a magician, face painting, music and food for the public’s enjoyment.

There is no cost to attend the event.

“It’s an opportunity for interaction between community members and emergency service personnel [police, fire, EMS] in a non-emergency context,” said McNutt.
He continued, “[It’s an] opportunity for positive interactions with the community to improve relationships and provide them with an opportunity for a better understanding of the services provided.”
