SOUTHWICK – Members of the Southwick Select Board are seeking a new doctor in town.

After Baystate Health closed its College Highway office, concerned Select Board member Russell Fox said he called the health system. What he found out was that their lease was up, there was a shortage of primary care physicians and there are services offered through Baystate Health at Baystate Noble Hospital and doctors in neighboring Westfield and Feeding Hills.

“For the first time in my life, we don’t have a doctor’s office in Southwick,” said Fox, noting the town has a “graying community” that needs doctors in town.

The discussion took place during the March 22 board meeting where Select Board Chair Douglas Moglin agreed with Fox’s sentiment, saying “it’s a shame to lose that resource in town.”

Moglin said he was concerned that the lack of a doctor in Southwick could end up taxing the emergency services.

“It could put stress on our fire and police departments,” he said.

The board agreed to reach out to other health providers “and see what we can do.”

During the meeting, the Select Board approved the schedule for The Wick 338 motocross, which includes the usual races and practices as well as a vehicle showcase and drive-in movies.

The Motocross Nationals are tentatively slated for June 26, however The Wick 338 owner Rick Johnson told the board that he is not sure they can have the professional race there due to current capacity limits. He said they need to increase the current 12 percent attendance limit or charge a “ridiculously high” price for tickets.

Johnson said he would look at every financial and business model to see if hosting the Nationals was going to come to fruition this year, noting he would host a small, local event that day if Nationals did not take place.

The board also discussed reopening all Southwick Town Hall departments.

Currently Town Clerk Michelle Hill’s office is the only one fully open for business. Other departments are open, but the building is not.

“I’m not saying we should do it all at once, but we should have a plan,” said Fox.

Moglin and Select Board member Joseph Deedy agreed. They also said they need to consider remote meeting options moving forward once the board begins meeting in-person. Moglin said he would like to have the option available.
