SPRINGFIELD – Josh Zakim knows some people aren’t really sure what the Secretary of State does for the Commonwealth and he’s ready to answer their questions.

Zakim, the Democrat who is challenging one of his own, longtime incumbent William Galvin, recently appeared at a house party fundraiser hosted by Springfield City Councilor Kateri Walsh.

Humid weather and a chance of rain didn’t deter about 50 people who turned up to meet the progressive Democrat who is making voter registration issues among the centerpiece of his campaign.

Zakim is a Boston City Councilor and attorney. He is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the Northeastern University School of Law.

He told The Reminder that Galvin has been actively opposing voter registration reforms and innovations.

“It’s time for Massachusetts to have a progressive Secretary of State, “ he said.

According to Zakim’s website, there are more than 680,00 eligible but unregistered voters in the Commonwealth. His platform includes same day registration, which exists in 17 other states. He believes weekend election days could increase voter turnout and supports the idea a voter doesn’t need a reason to ask for an absentee ballot.

He also wants to modernize the electronic security of the office of Secretary of State to keep elections secure.

If elected he would increase the availability of public records and supports an eight-year cumulative term limit for all statewide elected offices, including the Secretary of State.

Zakim said his campaign has reached out to Galvin to set up a debate but so far “he has resisted debating us.”
