SPRINGFIELD – Dakin Humane Society is preparing to welcome beagles rescued from a breeding facility in Virginia and will be taking applications from potential pet parents.

The organization is cautioning people the dogs will require much attention, training and affection.

According to the Dakin website, “We are unlikely to receive any puppies. All dogs will be un-housetrained. All dogs have lived their entire lives in a kennel environment. They have never been outdoors, in a home, for a walk on a leash or ridden in a car. They will need a lot of time and gentle training as they learn about their new world. If you are looking for regular family pet, they are unlikely to be a match for you. We may receive dogs who will never be behaviorally normal in a pet home because of their traumatic history.”

There were 4,000 beagles rescued from the Envigo facility in

Cumberland, VA, by The Humane Society of the United States. The dogs were bred to be sold to laboratories for animal testing.

Lee Chambers of Dakin explained to Reminder Publishing, “I don’t yet have specific information for you about the number of dogs we’ll be getting at Dakin Humane Society or their arrival time. That’s still all being sorted out. We told our contact at the Humane Society of the United States that we could take up to 10 dogs.

She added, “Dakin is an organization that is committed to helping, so the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has us on their list in cases like this. All logistics currently are with HSUS as they work through sorting which organizations get what dogs and when. It’s a massive effort. The dogs aren’t currently en route to us; mid-transport in this case likely means the dogs are out of the facility and likely in a humane holding area where they are being assessed and cared for, and decisions are being made about which dogs are going where. Plus, the paperwork and transport details are taking a good amount of time to settle.
