SPRINGFIELD – The City Council is looking for city residents who wish to serve on two new committees – one devoted to developing “green” initiatives and practices and the other that would find a location and help design the city’s first dog park.

City Council President Orlando Ramos announced the two new committees and the councilors who would lead them at après conference on Jan. 18. Marcus Williams will chair the Dog Park committee, while Jesse Lederman will lead the Green Committee

Ramos said he selected Williams for his grant-writing expertise, which will be necessary in funding a dog park and Lederman for his long activism on environmental issues.

What Ramos is now hoping  to see is members of the public volunteering to serve on the two committees. He said he is looking for people “who want to get involved in the legislative process.”

Lederman believes the programs and polices that could be developed by the Green Committee would “be a substantial benefit” to the city “ as it reaches its goal of the most sustainable city in Massachusetts.”

Williams said his committee was formed in reaction to residents citing the need for a dog park. He noted that Ludlow and Agawam both have a dog park, which draws attention to quality of life issues.” The committee would be charged with finding a location and creating a construction timeline, Ramos said.

If people are interested in applying, they should submit a letter of interest or a resume to citycouncil@springfieldcityhall.com or by calling 787-6170.
