SPRINGFIELD – After more than 50 years of family ownership, second-generation publishers Chris and Dan Buendo have sold Reminder Publications to The Republican.

The Republican leadership told employees there will be no changes in the content or the staffs of the two weekly newspapers and the two monthly magazines published by the company.

The two private companies will continue to be operated as separate businesses, with separate staffs in their current locations, according to Francis Smith, new general manager of The Reminders. “There will be no layoffs, and absolutely no interruption of normal news coverage or advertiser services,” said Smith. “Basically, it’s business as usual.”

The newspaper company was founded in 1962 by Carlo and Anne Buendo. Over the years, it added publications and expanded its coverage area.

The Buendo brothers will remain as consultants to The Reminders, continue their popular column and appear on the masthead as co-publishers emeriti. The Republican has signed a four-year lease so that the Reminder staff can remain in its current offices in East Longmeadow.

“We are grateful to our employees and advertisers for your support since 1962. We are also thankful to The Republican for keeping us involved in the paper’s future,” said Chris and Dan Buendo, co-publishers emeriti.

“We believe in print and want The Reminders to remain as the strong and independent local publications that readers and advertisers have come to cherish,” said George Arwady, publisher and CEO of The Republican.
