SPRINGFIELD –  On Sept. 12, dozens of residents and activists gathered in downtown Springfield to assist in the painting of a Black Lives Matter mural.

The mural was painted on Court Street, which was closed off for the weekend. Among those in attendance were Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, City Council President Justin Hurst and City Councilor Jesse Lederman. Councilor Trayce Whitfield led and organized the project.

Volunteers signed up online prior to the mural painting in groups of 10 to paint the 20-foot long letters. Painting began at 9 a.m. and continued until 7 p.m., with every volunteer slot filled before the event began. Volunteers wore masks and socially distanced as they rolled bright yellow paint onto the Court?Street mural.

In addition to speakers, music and volunteers painting, the event also featured artists set up in Court Square creating pieces as the mural was painted. The featured artists used mediums such as spray and oil paints to depict images in the theme of Black Lives Matter.
