Hundreds of people joined dignitaries on June 19 in Riverfront Park in Springfield to dedicate a new memorial to the first responders who lost their lives during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The centerpiece of the memorial is an I-beam from the wreckage in New York City. Two spotlights will shine on the 9.5-foot tall I-beam, the artifact awarded to the Spirit of Springfield by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
