Springfield Museums host annual gingerbread competition

SPRINGFIELD – On Dec. 12, dozens of people from around Western Massachusetts poured into the science building at the Springfield Museums for their annual Culture and Cocktails event featuring submitted gingerbread creations.

The submitted gingerbread buildings and sculptures were for the annual gingerbread competition that takes place each year.The competition drew submissions from as far as New York City and New Hampshire.

The competition featured submissions in four categories:the Adult Division, the Youth Division for ages 13 to 18, the Family Division and the Professional Division.

The theme of this year’s competition was “Hollywood & the Holidays!” Contestants honored the theme with portrayals of classic movies such as “How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmas,” “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” “A Christmas Story,” “Elf,” “The Polar Express” and more.

The top three winners in each category won a yearlong membership to the Springfield Museums. The top two contestants of each category were also awarded a Yankee Candle gift basket.

The following gingerbread creations won in their division:?

Adult Division:

• First Place: Olivia, Donovan, Michelle, and Don Salva with “Nan” Linda Sliech, all of Feeding Hills: “Holiday Movie Night at the El Capitan.”

• Second Place: Cheryl Barnhart of Agawam: “A Vintage Christmas.”

• Third Place:  Tammy Richter of Southwick: “Christmas Medley - A Child’s Christmas Dream.”

Youth Division - Ages 13-18:

•First Place: Katie Pasay of Springfield: “Gingerbread Polar Express.”

• Second Place: Nora Scott and Zuzanna Hitchcock of Westfield: “Ultimate Hollywood Christmas Party.”

• Third Place:  Springfield Chapter United Synagogue Youth/Kadima; Temple Beth El in Springfield (youth group): “Chanukah Winter Wonderland.”

Family Division:

• First Place: Katherine and Justinian Alves and Karin and Betsy Johnson of Springfield: “Sparkling Lights of Bright Nights.”

• Second Place: Eli and Zachary Arvantely of Northborough: “Star Wars - Holiday Death Destroyer”

• Third Place: Evelyn and Violet Schettler of Longmeadow “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas.”

Professional Division:

• Chef Eric Hirsh  of Mystic, CT: “Showing now, ‘Santa Claus is Coming to Town.’"

The gingerbread submissions will be on display at the museum on 21 Edwards St. until Dec. 31. The museums are closed on Mondays, open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Admission to the museums cost $25 for adults, $16.50 for adults 60 or older and college students and $13 for children three to 17-years-old. Children under the age of three are free.?Springfield residents with a valid ID are also free.
