Springfield School Committee reviews lunch program, dedications

SPRINGFIELD – As the district continues to normalize its operations from the pandemic, the Springfield School Committee reviewed a yearly update from the district’s food program, Sodexo, during their Nov. 18 meeting.

Resident District Manager Roger Weger showcased a presentation highlighting Sodexo’s program, Home Grown Springfield, and their efforts to feed students throughout the pandemic via classroom meals. “I think we can all agree that it’s been a challenging year. However, we also look forward to the opportunity to be able to have our students return to the cafeteria where they can enjoy a wide variety of meal options and side dishes,” said Weger. He also revealed that 9.7 million meals were provided for students from the start of the pandemic in March 2020 to August 2021.

Weger highlighted accomplishments by Home Grown Springfield over the last year, including the addition of breakfast meals for each classroom. While the district used to rely upon pre-made, pre-packaged breakfast items, Weger shared that the district now produces their own meals.

The district manager also spoke on the importance of supporting local foods made and grown in New England, with Home Grown Springfield spending 19 percent of their food cost toward localized products. “By investing in higher quality products, our meals are better for Springfield students, the local economy and the environment,” said Weger. Home Grown Springfield also made sustainable solutions a key ingredient in their plan, sending food waste to Vanguard Renewables for the creation of natural gas, renewable electricity and chemical-free fertilizer.

Weger also highlighted future additions to the Home Grown Springfield program. He said he wants the program to continue to incorporate student feedback through the Tiger Team program while also incorporating advancements to their culinary craftsmanship. Among those additions, Weger highlighted an empanada maker and other scratch-made, handheld items for breakfast and lunch.

Committee member LaTonia Naylor praised the program for being more involved in student interests. “Thank you for listening to the students and families,” said Naylor.

School building dedications

The School Committee also approved the renaming of the Homer St. portion of the Homer/DeBarry School in honor of Benjamin Swan. As a former state representative who stood as a vital figure in civil rights, Swan’s esteemed career was praised by the committee members. “It’s just an honor to be able to sit here and cast a vote to name a school in your honor,” said committee member Denise Hurst.

Swan was welcomed by the committee to reflect on the dedication. “I appreciate your comments regarding my character. It is an honor,” said Swan. The School Committee also approved the naming of the Duggan Academy auditorium in honor of Eleanor and William Barker.
