WEST SPRINGFIELD – Carl Basile, manager of Papillon Ink in Enfield, is hoping to bring family-friendly to the world of tattoo conventions.

“We are one of the first companies to ever have a family-friendly convention. My wife and I visit conventions all over the country, and we are disturbed that there is nothing for the kids to do while mom or dad want to get a tattoo. I don’t see the point in that. Kids can be welcomed to the free kid’s section so mom and dad can get tattoos. I just don’t see kids sitting and watching parents for so long,” Basile said.

This is what Basile hopes will make the Papillon Tattoo Supply First Annual Tattoo Convention different from other tattoo-focused conventions in the area. A family-friendly feel is one of his top priorities. The First Annual Tattoo Convention will be hosted at the Big E Fairgrounds on April 12 through April 14.

“We’re looking to have a family-friendly event. No freak shows, no nudity, no one hanging from hooks. We want people to get up and start dancing and have a place to do that; to have a good time,” Basile said.

Papillon Tattoo Supply is known for being the supplier of Starbrite Colors tattoo inks and tattoo machines. Michael Nicholson invented the inks in 1995. Basile has also begun the development of hemp infused inks. After being diagnosed with leukemia, Basile was told it would be unsafe for him to be tattooed again. Now in remission, Basile still needs to be cautious of his health. The hemp ink includes CBD oil and promotes faster healing than traditional ink.

“It made it possible for me to get a tattoo. I’ve had feedback from artists all over the country about high points of the ink and no one has given me disappointing news. I’m happy I can brag about something I did right,” Basile said.

The Tattoo Convention will include activities such as tattoo contests, food, on-site piercings, vendors, on-site tattooing and live music from bands and a DJ. Basile said he is also hoping to incorporate a body painter, but that had not yet been confirmed.

For kids, activities include bounce houses and face painting. “All of the moms and grandmothers at the shop picked the activities for the kids,” Basile shared.

Including kid’s activities will help avoid the distraction to the tattoo artists as well, according to Basile. “It affects the artist and it’s not fun for kids to watch for such a long process,” Basile said.

Basile said he believes working with the Big E Fairgrounds adds to the family feel of the event. “Working with the Big E, I think that’s good, too. They’re known for having family activities and for being a place where families can make memories. I thank the West Springfield Health Department for working alongside us and making it possible to bring this to the venue,” Basile said.

Aside from the focus on family, Basile said he also hopes to combine different types of artists alongside tattoo artists. “We’ve invited body painters and oil painters. It’s not just a tattoo convention, but an art convention. It’s a place where all artists of all kinds can have their work judged,” Basile said.

Basile continued, “Artists are one of a kind. I think they are underestimated by people. These people are very talented. We have a gentleman coming in from Ecuador. If you look at what this man can do, it’s incredible. Painting on canvas is one thing, but painting on skin is another. Everything we do is for the arts.”

Basile said he also hopes to bring attention to the fact that tattooing is an art form and to break any remaining stigma behind tattoos. “I think tattoo conventions are happening everywhere, all around you, worldwide. You don’t find many people without any tattoos at all. I think the world of art needs to be exposed. Tattoos are not a bad thing. People have been tattooing since ancient times. It’s friendlier and cleaner than ever,” Basile said.

Although there are some nerves in the mix with this being Papillon’s first convention, Basile said he is confident about the success of the event thanks to his staff. “It’s family-friendly so everyone can come and have fun. There is a welcome to everyone to have something they can enjoy. It’s not just about getting a tattoo. I have a great team of staff who are knowledgeable. We are going to be really nervous on our first one, but we’re going to do our best to make sure everyone has fun there. It’s just a fun day,” Basile said.

Single day passes are available for $20 and weekend passes are available for $45. Admission for children under 12 is free. The convention will be hosted in the Young Building at the Eastern States Exposition Fairgrounds. For more information, visit papillonsupply.com.
