WEST SPRINGFIELD – What’s better than a run through a beautiful park at the peak of fall foliage? Enjoying some post-run apple cider and a doughnut.

The Rotary Club of West Springfield is hosting its second annual “Donut Dash” 5K on Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The race begins and ends at the UNICO building inside Mittineague Park and follows a course with views of the Westfield River.

“It’s a good time,” said Paul Shields, co-owner of Donut Dip, which is providing the donuts and cider. “Have a run through beautiful Mittineague Park, raise some money and have a tasty doughnut afterward.”

Shields said he, his father, and grandfather have been members of the Rotary Club at different times, though he is not a current member. Participants can register at eorcrunner1.wufoo.com/forms/rotary-club-of-west-springfield-donut-dash-5k. Registration is $25 before Oct. 10 and $30 on race day.

Participants can run individually or with a team of up to six people. Team sign up is $100 until Oct. 10 and $120 after that. Same-day registration will be available starting at 9 a.m. at the UNICO Building.

Prizes will be awarded for the fastest male and the fastest female. There will also be prizes within age groups. Team prizes will go to the fastest team, the slowest team, and the team with the best costume.

The first 150 participants will receive a commemorative t-shirt with registration. Spectators are welcome. Parking is available on Altamont Avenue.

Proceeds from the race will “fund local community organizations and the humanitarian efforts of Rotary International,” the organization stated.

In addition to raising money for the Rotary Club, the Parish Cupboard van will be on hand to collect non-perishable food donations.
