WEST SPRINGFIELD – On Apr. 27, West Springfield will be hosting their annual West Side Clean-Up Day. The day will kick off at 8:30 a.m. at Morgan Road Pavilion with donuts and coffee provided by Donut Dip. A committee of volunteers from the town has held West Side Clean-Up Day for over 10 years.

“Every year we have a big turn out of volunteers, were hoping for that again and some great weather!”  said Richard Peck, chair of the West Side Clean- Up Day Committee.

Groups of volunteers from the high school, Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops along with church groups and the Sheriff’s Department will all be lending a helping hand to clean up the town.

Volunteers will be sent to different public areas around West Springfield such as the town commons, parks and schools.

From 11:30 a.m.- 1 p.m the group will meet again at the Morgan Road Pavilion for a lunch provided by The Lion’s Club. Volunteers will also be given a raffle ticket at the beginning of the day for a chance to win four tickets to a Red Sox game at Fenway Park. In past years during the lunch break, there has also been an Earth Day Exhibit with different presenters from The Water Department, The Conservation Department and other local environmental conscious groups along with an electric car that is owned by the town.

“This is a grass roots thing, not a national operation, just local people volunteering with help from local businesses.” commented Peck.

The committee is made up of about a half dozen people with many perennial volunteers that do a lot to help the day run smoothly.

The committee provides trash bags to volunteers the morning of the Clean- Up Day. The committee asks that if volunteers own work gloves, to bring them to the event. It is advised that volunteers wear work and weather appropriate clothes. Volunteers are welcome to come the day of the event registration is not needed.
