WESTFIELD — Polls open as early as this weekend for Westfield’s municipal election, with contested races for mayor, Ward 1 city councilor and School Committee.

Although Election Day isn’t until Nov. 2, City Clerk Karen Fanion said there are several other ways to cast a ballot. Westfield will offer early voting, voting by mail, and absentee voting this year.

Early voting allows residents to vote in person on a day other than Election Day. All early voting is in the Council Chambers on the second floor of City Hall, 59 Court St., Westfield. Early voting is available 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 23; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Oct. 25, 26, 27 and 29; and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Oct. 28.

All registered voters are eligible to vote by mail in this election. To register for a mailed ballot, they must pick up a form from the clerk’s office in City Hall or at www.cityofwestfield.org/DocumentCenter/View/10403/2021-Vote-by-Mail-Application, fill it out and sign it, and return it to the clerk’s office or outside drop box by mail or hand-delivery by 5 p.m. on Oct. 27.

Absentee ballots follow the same procedure as voting by mail, but are available only to voters with a religious, medical or travel-related reason they cannot vote in person on Election Day.

The top of the ballot this year features a rematch of the 2019 mayoral race, with incumbent Donald Humason Jr. again facing Michael McCabe, after winning a narrow victory two years ago. Also being decided is a six-way race for three seats on the School Committee. Two incumbents, Timothy O’Connor and Heather Sullivan, are seeking re-election. The four challengers are Martha Breton, Jeffrey Gosselin, Kathleen Hillman and Tom Lewis. School Committee members serve a four-year term.

Other city-wide races on the ballot are uncontested. Incumbent at-large City Councilors James Adams, Dan Allie, Brent Bean II, Dave Flaherty, Cindy Harris, Kristen Mello and Richard Sullivan Jr. are running for another two-year term with no challengers. Andrea Pennington is the only candidate for a six-year term as Athenaeum trustee.

Ward 1 features the only contested City Council race on the ballot, with Marybeth Berrien challenging incumbent Nicholas Morganelli Jr. The other ward councilors are running unopposed: Ralph Figy (Ward 2), Bridget Matthews-Kane (Ward 3), Michael Burns (Ward 4), John Beltrandi III (Ward 5) and William Onyski (Ward 6). Councilors serve two-year terms.

All members of the Municipal Light Board are running unopposed for re-election to two-year terms: Kevin Kelleher Sr. (Ward 1), Ray Rivera (Ward 2), Dawn Renaudette (Ward 3), Francis Liptak (Ward 4), Joseph Mitchell (Ward 5) and Robert Sacco (Ward 6).

On the traditional Election Day, Nov. 2, each ward will have one or two polling places open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Voters must vote at the polling place for the precinct where they live. Polling places are the same as in previous years, with the exception of Ward 2, where voting booths have moved to Westfield Middle School because the usual polling place, the Westfield Senior Center, is not fully reopened.

Ward 1, Precinct A: Southampton Road School, 330 Southampton Road.

Ward 1, Precinct B: Westfield High School, 177 Montgomery Road.
