WESTFIELD — Michael McCabe defeated Mayor Donald Humason in the Nov. 2 city election, winning a wide majority of 4,714 votes to the incumbent’s 3,846.

McCabe won all but one of the city’s 12 precincts, according to preliminary counts announced by City Clerk Karen Fanion on election night. McCabe will begin his two-year term in January 2022. It was the second mayoral election in a row with the same candidates; Humason had won by a 90-vote margin in 2019. It was Humason's first electoral defeat in 20 years of holding public office, including 18 years in the state Legislature before he ran for mayor.

Both School Committee incumbents topped the list of vote-getters in a six-way race, with Timothy O’Connor winning 4,429 votes and Heather Sullivan garnering 4,349. Kathleen Hillman will take the third open seat on the board, with 2,472 votes. All three will serve four-year terms. The unsuccessful challengers were Tom Lewis, 2,389 votes; Martha Marie Breton, 2,342 votes; and Jeffrey Gosselin, 2,275 votes.

In Ward 1, incumbent City Councilor Nicholas Morganelli easily fended off a challenge by Marybeth Berrien, 1,049 to 609.

The rest of the City Council was re-elected without opposition, including at-large incumbent councilors James Adams, Dan Allie, Brent Bean II, Dave Flaherty, Cindy Harris, Kristen Mello and Richard Sullivan Jr., and ward representatives Ralph Figy (Ward 2), Bridget Matthews-Kane (Ward 3), Michael Burns (Ward 4), John Beltrandi III (Ward 5) and William Onyski (Ward 6). All will serve an additional two-year term.

All six incumbents on the Municipal Light Board were re-elected with no opponents. Kevin Kelleher Sr. (Ward 1), Ray Rivera (Ward 2), Dawn Renaudette (Ward 3), Francis Liptak (Ward 4), Joseph Mitchell (Ward 5) and Robert Sacco (Ward 6) will all serve an additional two-year term on the board.

Andrea Pennington was the only candidate for a six-year term as Westfield Athenaeum trustee.
