WESTFIELD – Whether you need flowering plants, vegetable seeds, cat treats or your dog bathed, the new Smithland Pet & Garden at 81 Springfield Road has you covered.

The store had its grand opening April 10 with a celebration that included Mayor Donald F. Humason Jr., state Rep. Kelly Pease and city councilors, as well as customers.

Smithland CEO John Atkins said it was wonderful to open the doors after months of anticipation from the community.

“We’re excited to be in Westfield,” said Atkins. “Everyone seems to be very happy that we’re here and we look forward to a fruitful partnership.”

Property owner Nabil Hannoush and his wife Julie attended the opening. Hannoush purchased the property when the previous occupant was still at the location. When that garden center closed, Hannoush wanted to maintain the long tradition of a garden center and Agway dealer there.

Smithland’s parent company is CT Gardens, LLC., a North Branford, CT.-based private equity-held, specialty retailer with 12 stores located in rural Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. The company was founded in 2016 with the acquisition of Bergantino Agway with six free-standing locations. In March 2019, the company acquired five additional locations from Dave’s Soda & Pets.

Smithland Store Manager Scott Robbins said customers were happy to discover that the Agway tradition continues at Smithland, which sells a large variety of Agway products.

It also has outdoor decor and Webber products, bird seed and much more, including a do-it-yourself dog wash.

“For $13, people can bring in their dogs and use the dog washing station, including shampoo and dryers, and then we do the clean-up,” said Robbins.

Smithland Pet & Garden is open Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 7 p.m., Saturdays from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sundays from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.
