YMCA set to offer classes and special programs throughout February

WESTFIELD – Throughout the month of February, the Westfield YMCA will host several special classes and programs, including two different sessions to help golfers get in shape before they hit the course this spring.

Cindy Agan, the Health and Wellness program director at the Y, explained that the class will take place in two separate groups, the first of which is a morning class on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m. and the second is on Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 p.m. The classes will run for the entire month of February.

“The program is really in place to help golfers prepare for the season and the class will focus on a range of motion with a focus on the core and obliques,” Agan said, “And since a golfer’s power comes from their legs, they’ll be doing a variety of activities focusing on strengthening their legs such as squats and lunges.”

Agan said the program costs $80 for non-members and $45 for members. At the time of publication there was one more opening for the morning classes but still plenty of space in the evening classes.

She said that Chris Schicker, one of the YMCA’s personal trainers, will be leading the classes and showing the golfers a short and simple routine to help them get into shape once golf season starts.

Agan said one of the YMCA’s focuses in 2020 is family activities. “One of the ways we’re changing things this year is by expanding our family activities both at the Y and at Camp Shepard, so in February we’ll be holding a Pound Class and in March we’ll have a family Pickleball day as a part of our new Family Sundays program,” she said.

Agan said the Pound Class will be on Feb. 23 and the Pickleball day will be March 15.

In addition to the classes it offers, the Y will also host an open house from Feb. 17 - 20 so non-members can check out what the Y has to offer for free during school vacation week if they are looking for things to do with the kids.
