HAMPDEN – For those who travel through downtown Hampden on a regular basis, drivers may be wondering why silt fences are erected alongside the main roads. Highway Superintendent Mark Langone told Reminder Publications of the upcoming construction coming to town.

“The construction that people are seeing take place right now on Somers Road is a result of Columbia Gas making repairs and improvements to their system.

Also, as part of this project, a new section of gas main is being installed and will run from the Main Street and Somers Road intersection, down the west side tree belt, and tie into the existing gas main at the corner of East Longmeadow Road and Somers Road,” Langone said.

While the construction is underway, Langone doesn’t anticipate any road closures.

“Between this project and the upgrades currently being made to the Shell Station, drivers may experience minor traffic delays because of reduced travel lanes,” Langone explained. “From what I’ve seen however, the contractors and traffic officers are doing a pretty good job in keeping the flow moving.”

Langone expects this portion of the project will be completed within the next two to three weeks.  This includes the final road and property restorations.

“Following that, Columbia Gas will be making minor repairs and improvements at various locations on Wilbraham Road, Mill Road and Main Street,” Langone said.
