WILBRAHAM – The Wilbraham Light Shop has sat unoccupied at 2511 Boston Rd., for about 20 years, but new owners are planning to shine a light on the property.

Jill Poehlman has been in lighting design for 32 years and previously worked at the Wilbraham Light Shop. After that business closed she worked for Hampden Zimmerman for awhile, and has been doing lamp repair in her home for several years.

Poehlman said her husband drove by the shuttered building and saw that it was for sale. He called her and asked if she wanted to buy it. The couple has spent approximately $500,000 between buying the property, the extensive renovations and acquiring the inventory for their new lighting and home decor showroom, Simply Electrifying.

“Our inventory will never be the same twice,” Poehlman said. She plans to order weekly and carry just a few companies that offer a large assortment of lights. That way, she said, she can spend money on actually showcasing the product.

When it comes to product, Poehlman said she plans on “bringing in the latest and greatest, not 1985.”

Aside from lighting, the products at Simply Electrifying will include lamp shades, wall mirrors, candles and some furniture.

“We are not offering any sales or discounts, but we do offer guaranteed low pricing,” she said, and assured that everything will be returnable.

“We’re very honest people, we’re not doing it to get rich,” Poehlman said. They “just [want to] help people out with their lighting needs.”

Poehlman said she feels confident that the showroom will be a success.

“Connecticut Lighting [Centers] is the only real good showroom around, but people don’t want to go,” to Connecticut, Poehlman said. She is not concerned about online competitors, either.

“Most people that are serious about buying good lighting, they want to see it, touch it, feel it,” she said.

While Poehlman said it would be ambitious to be ready by Christmas, she plans to be open by the first of the year.

The business will be different from when Jim McPherson ran it as The Wilbraham Light Shop, but Poehlman said the late owner was “such a peach,” that she plans to have a plaque in the showroom in memory of him.
