WILBRAHAM – Rick’s Place, a non–profit organization located in Wilbraham which offers grief support to grieving children and their families, is hosting their second annual Run for Rick’s Place on May 4.

In 2018, Rick’s Place decided to move away from hosting their annual gala and instead chose hosting a 5K walk/run as one of their three major fundraisers. “We wanted a family-friendly event that could include the children and families who participate in our grief groups,” Executive Director at Rick’s Place Diane Murray shared with Reminder Publishing.

More than 150 people participated in the Run for Rick’s Place last year, with the event “earning more than expected” Murray stated. All funds from the event go directly to providing free grief support to children, teens and families from all over Western Massachusetts.

“My favorite part of our first 5K was Rick Thorpe’s parents, Ray and Marilyn, traveled a distance to surprise us with a visit. They were able to meet some of the families that we serve, some of our very generous sponsors and many dedicated volunteers,” Murray said. “That made the day even more special for all of us.” Thorpe is the namesake of Rick’s Place. He passed away in Tower Two of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.

At this year’s run there will be an “after event” that will include prizes, music, the Auntie Cathie’s food truck, the Scantic River Brewery beer tent and a raffle.

“A very exciting development for this year’s event is that PV Financial of Ludlow is raffling off Green Monster Red Sox tickets – front row!” Murray said. “Baystate Dental is adding two Crumpin–Fox golf foresomes to the raffle.”

Tickets for the raffle are on sale now, and for information on how to purchase tickets, visit the Rick’s Place website at ricksplacema.org. In addition, tickets will be sold at the event and the drawing will take place immediately following the race. Winners do not have to be present at the event to win.

“This is a rain or shine event so we’re hoping for beautiful weather. The event is open to the public and we’re hoping to double the number of walkers and runners. It’s going to be a fun, family-friendly event,” Murray stated.

The 5K walk/run will begin at 12:30 p.m. on May 4. Admission for the 5K is $30 for participants who are over 21 and $15 for those who are under 21. Participants that register online at ricksplacema.org before April 22 will receive a free t–shirt.
