WILBRAHAM – After just a few months in business, Sue Burke, owner of Susie B’s Sweets-n-Treats, is catering to area sweet tooths with her cookie creations.

“Right now it’s a little crazy because of the holidays, but it’s picking up. People are starting to recognize my products,” Burke said.

In October, Burke began her home-based bakery in her kitchen in Wilbraham. “It’s a whole learning experience,” Burke said about trying to integrate her home life and her business, but she told Reminder Publishing that it’s mostly about the organization of her kitchen and time.

Rather than a sideline, Susie B’s Sweet-n-Treats is Burke’s main business. Formerly in the medical field, Burke decided to change directions.

“I’ve always loved baking,” she said. “I learned this from my grandmother. She was an amazing baker and I learned watching her, and I thought, ‘Gee, I’d like to carry that on.’”

She worked for a time at The Village Cafe in Wilbraham and sold her baked goods at farmer’s markets. She said people really responded to her cookies, so she decided to create a home business making them.

“With COVID hitting, people were asking me for cookies because they’re individually wrapped,” Burke said. She ships and delivers locally, so people don’t have to go out in public.

Burke is Servsafe Certified and has a Certificate in Allergen Awareness Training, but notes on her website that she uses nuts in some of her recipes and cannot guarantee traces don’t end up in other varieties. Most of her cookies come in packages of six, but she can also do special orders for larger events and weddings.

Burke makes many flavors year-round, but she also has seasonal products such as a peppermint crunch cookie, gingerbread houses and gingerbread people kits. For those with dietary restrictions, Burke offers gluten-free varieties of some popular flavors and a dairy-free 12-pack of cookies.

“All of my cookies – I know it sounds corny – but there’s a lot of love in all my recipes,” Burke said.
