WILBRAHAM – Town officials celebrated the groundbreaking of a solar array system at the site of the former Wilbraham landfill on June 2.

Department of Public Works (DPW) Director Edmond Miga Jr. told Reminder Publications the 750-kilowatt solar field would result in approximately $2 million during the next 20 years for the town.

“There’s a PILOT agreement that’s in lieu of taxes that [developer Altus Power America] agreed to pay us,” he added. “It’s equivalent to $126,000 a year in savings on our electric bills for the town, which is huge. And we combine that with doing LED lighting in the town hall, the DPW, and other town departments to save money also.”

He said the contractor, Renewable Energy Development Partners, should complete the project near the end of July. A ribbon cutting ceremony would likely take place around that time.
