A tale of two employers

Aug. 30, 2018 |

This weekend, our city welcomed a new community partner. MGM Springfield officially opened their doors Friday and has been operating at full speed all weekend. I did join my wife opening night to see what the hoopla was about, having never set foot in casino before. My analysis: there is a lot of entertainment for those who do not want to gamble. Being a mental health counselor, I know the danger of gambling addiction, so I am already inclined to avoid vices such as this. But the potential for other entertainment options are seemingly endless. There are a lot of “what if's” our elected officials will need to be prepared for in the coming year. Don’t worry, I’ll keep you apprised if what happens.

Now, on to the other major Springfield employer, Smith & Wesson. For the last few days a group of idealistic, ill-informed activists “marched”from Worcester to Springfield in an effort to bring attention to gun violence and blaming Smith & Wesson, in part, for the actions of madmen using their products to commit acts of violence.

The march culminated yesterday in Springfield in front of the firearm manufacturer's headquarters. At the same time there were dozens of pro Second Amendment activists showing support for the Constitution and the company that has employed thousands of Springfield residents for over a century. I wonder if our Springfield elected officials share the views of the gun control activists and believe Smith & Wesson should be held responsible for the actions of others and stop manufacturing the most common rifle across the United States.
