Go along to get along

Feb. 16, 2017 |

Which employees are able to vote themselves a pay raise? Our state legislators, that’s which ones. I don’t know of any other employee who can and I don’t think it should be legal. Let me tell you why this is possible. Tony Scibelli told me, when I was running for state representative in the then 13th Hampden Representative District, “You think you can make a difference if you get elected? You can’t, because this state is run by three people. The governor, president of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.”

The reasons the Speaker of the House and the President of the Senate control the votes is two fold. They decide which bills come up for consideration and when, if ever before the term is up and they choose the chairmen of the committees. If a representative or senator wants a chairmanship, which gives them extra pay, they better do the speaker’s or president’s bidding. Also consider the peer pressure and acceptance of their fellow representatives and senators.

If they want their support, they had better “go along to get along.” So that is the State/Commonwealth we live in. The people we vote for don’t need to vote in our best interest, only theirs.
