Oppose sports betting and online gambling

May 24, 2018 |

Regarding your article that the recent decision by the U.S. Supreme Court could mean sports betting could come to Massachusetts:

You are darn right it could come here as well as all other types of online gambling!  It’s more imperative than ever that people speak up.

We believe the U.S. Supreme Court Decision to eliminate the federal law prohibiting sports betting is a naked money grab by the greedy from the wallets of ordinary Americans cloaked as a “states rights” case.   Here are just two reasons to be opposed:

First, sports fans should worry about game-fixing and an end to true competition.  It’s already a problem in international soccer.  As an example, championships such as the World Series of baseball, will be pressured to fix the games to run their full seven-game length to generate more money.

Second, online gambling proponents freely admit they are targeting young adults. Chances are they will be an easy group to fool since they are used to doing most things on their devices and the gaming industry knows every psychological trick to lure them in.  With two granddaughters approaching young adulthood, we will be asking our governor, senator, and rep. to vote against legalizing any type of sports betting or online gambling.

Where money is being made illegally, many of our elected and appointed officials seem to believe it’s their job to legalize everything and grab the money for the government or their wealthy donors.  They put money in a fund to help people who develop problems and give no more though to the down side other than that. Consumer and environmental protections continue to be rolled back and rolled back.

We are in for a very corrupt and greedy time if we keep electing people who care more about money than about health, safety, and values.  Do not be complacent.  Speak up!
