Running for School Committee

Jan. 28, 2016 |

A high quality education is undeniably the greatest gift we can give children. A high quality education empowers our children. It is the reason every child in America is guaranteed an education and schools are judged not only by their highest achieving students but also their most struggling.  Longmeadow is a town known for educational excellence and with that standing comes a responsibility by our school district to always reach higher and raise the bar of what is seen as possible by every child. If elected as a school committee member, I will utilize my knowledge, experience, dedication and passion to ensure every voice is heard.  Together, we will raise the bar and move the district to an even higher level of excellence for every child.

As a graduate of Columbia University with a masters degree in social work and a masters degree in public health my professional background is in clinical practice, child development and program design and evaluation. I know the importance of a whole systems approach; working together with parents, teachers, administrators, agencies and physicians has been imperative to my work with children and it is in that same light that I would approach the role of school committee member.

As a two-time graduate fellow at the Yale Child Study Center, I worked alongside world renowned researchers, clinicians and physicians and assisted in the assessment and treatment of children within outpatient clinics, schools and head start programs. As a clinician at North Central Counseling Services in Connecticut I evaluated and treated primarily high risk children with a wide range of psychological disorders. I’ve also worked at New York Presbyterian Hospital treating children and families living with HIV; I’ve analyzed perinatal data for the March of Dimes in their national headquarters; I've worked as a research assistant at the University of Massachusetts; I was an outreach worker for Senior Services in Norwalk, CT, a clinician at the Jewish Home in Fairfield CT and a volunteer for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children in Greenfield.

Over the years I have been very involved with Longmeadow’s educational system advocating not only for my own children but every child. In May of last year I took the lead in developing the Special Education Alliance of Longmeadow (SEAL). My goal with SEAL has been to improve special education through program evaluation, design, parent involvement and collaboration with district staff and administrators. SEAL has now become a vital part of this community and I am very proud to have been able to launch it in a way that it can continue to grow with the school district for years to come.

Longmeadow is a model for educational excellence and with that role comes an even greater responsibility to continually examine policies, procedures, programs and curricula by involving staff, administration and parents in the discussion and decision making. Decisions in education should not be made in exclusion of the community for whom they involve and affect. As a parent of four children and a resident of Longmeadow for 14 years, I am excited at the potential to move the Longmeadow school district to even greater heights by working together with parents, staff and administration as a member of the school committee.
