Send children back to school

Aug. 18, 2020 |

“Is teaching children an essential service?” asked members of the West Springfield Republican Town Committee (RTC).

While nurses and doctors have worked through the virus pandemic so have store cashiers, construction workers, and many entrepreneurs. Working is not only about health it is also about financial survival. Many parents depend on the schools to care for their children while at work. The schools are an integral part of our community life.

The West Springfield School Committee voted unanimously to not open school but instead to continue remote learning until Nov. 2, the day before the presidential election.

Greg Neffinger, former mayor and member of the West Springfield RTC, said, “This is another example of politicians not making the tough decision for fear of criticism. They are putting themselves before what is best for the children.”

So is there incentive to go back to school? Most private schools will be teaching in September. We were told to shut down because millions would die and the emergency rooms would be full. After much research we have methods available for lowering risk for children, teachers and parents. It is time to get our kids back to school.

West Springfield has been identified as one of 318 low risk municipalities in the state as identified by the governor and his cadre of heath advisors. After reviewing all of the data, Gov. Baker said, “I can’t imagine a good reason not to go back.”

We feel that teaching children in a classroom environment is an essential service. It’s time to get the children back to school.
