Springfield is making progress

March 15, 2018 |

I’d like to join Allen Zippen, who recently wrote about the progress that the city of Springfield is making, progress that has implications for the entire region.  To Mr. Zippen’s list of positives, I would add the Climate Action and Resilience Plan  (CARP) that Springfield residents and community partners produced.  A truly collaborative project, Springfield’s CARP proposes long-term goals that aim to thwart the negative impact of climate change, promote the growth of green technology and businesses, and protect the health and well-being of all city residents.

Though the CARP’s first recommendation is for Springfield’s leaders to analyze the city’s current progress in these areas, a related priority is “…to invest additional staff..and financial resources to publicize and otherwise communicate with residents about the exemplary climate action and resilience work underway (and planned) by the city.”  All involved in the CARP project understand that its success depends on hiring a Sustainability Director who can oversee the implementation of CARP goals and communicate those efforts to city residents in a timely manner.

Though the CARP is a Springfield achievement, many of us in surrounding communities appreciate that its realization will have a positive impact throughout our region.  Hiring a Sustainability Director in Springfield to oversee the enactment of worthy climate action goals will certainly provide an exemplar for other Western Massachusetts towns to follow.
