We are hometown news

Springfield is moving forward

March 1, 2018 |

Although I currently live in Longmeadow I was born and raised in the North End and East Springfield areas of Springfield and I still consider Springfield to be my “home town.” I think it's about time that we recognized the truly positive changes that are taking place in the city.  The investment in the city by MGM – which is far more than a casino – along with the additional  businesses(i.e. CRRC which has taken over a long-time eyesore on the former Westinghouse property) that have come into the city in the past two or three years are indicators of the level of confidence investors have started to display here.

Although there is always work to do, we should also take note of the testing results, higher graduation rate and innovative programs in the Springfield Public Schools. We owe a huge vote of gratitude to the local businessmen who saw fit to purchase the Springfield Thunderbirds hockey franchise, a franchise that just two years ago was at best on life support.

The ownership group has gone far beyond what any average person could have expected in this short time. Their major accomplishment of an attendance figure that has increased by 50 percent thus far probably the most pertinent factor in the fact that the American Hockey League All-Star game will be held here in Springfield in January, 2019, after not having been here since 1959.

When these items along with many others are considered we all should take pride in the progress that has been made in the city and the progress that will continue in the years to come. Kudos to all of the community, business and political leaders who have helped to re-energize Springfield.
